Stop “End-of-Year Hustle” by Stopping Comparison

by Heather Dominick |

I've been mentoring Highly Sensitive Entrepreneurs and Leaders since 2010 and if there's one pattern I see repeatedly it's seasonal sabotage. It happens predictably at TWO significant times: mid-year and end-of-year. To support you with breaking the pattern and preparing to enter into the new year bright, let's focus on end-of-year hustle.

In This Wisdom Post

The Struggle Between the End-of-Year Hustle and Bustle Tendency and the Instinct to Slow Down

What my decade plus of practicum research has shown me is that most highly sensitives struggle between their natural nervous system instinct to slow down and take time for quiet reflection as part of end-of-year and the outer world’s tendency to shift into high-gear hustle and bustle. Not only does this high-gear overstimulate the nervous system activating physiological overwhelm, but it robs you of the intuitive insights needed to properly assess the learnings the past year has given you so you can then enter into the new year truly ready with a plan to do things differently. All so you’re not stuck repeating team or operation patterns that are not working, hitting sale number ceilings or any other form of business / leadership blocks.

Here’s What You Can Do Instead

1. Set aside one day before end of year that you intentionally use for end-of-year reflection and assessment. Ideally, this includes connecting in with your heart and intuitive guidance.

2. Take what comes from this day and identify 3 top system changes based on what didn’t work so well from the previous 10-12 months.

3. Assign “support” for each change identified- either a person or a program you can all upon to specifically support you with making these changes. Knowing these changes are meant to be done only by you reduces meaning-induced overwhelm.

4. Create reasonable due dates. The changes aren’t all meant to happen overnight or even by end of January. Knowing these changes are meant to happen over time also reduces meaning-induced overwhelm.

5. Use a weekly planning process to help you chunk down the steps needed for each system change. Ideally, this weekly process includes connecting in with your heart and intuitive guidance ongoing.

BONUS: choose consciously the end of year celebration activities you add to your calendar. Prepare to choose your YES and your NO wisely. A calm, healthy, nervous system you is your most important new year success asset.

Reflection

There are so many ways that comparison can show up in the end-of-year hustle tendency, for example: in our relationships with our families, activities with friends, what we see in social media, in what our colleagues have accomplished, and more.

Take a moment for self inquiry or journaling on the following questions:

  • Where is comparison energy showing up for you in relation to end of year hustle?
  • In what way is this comparison energy showing up for you? When scrolling on social media? With how much you’ve accomplished compared to others? With what material possessions you have in comparison to others?

Next Inspired Action

Based on your answers to the above questions, what is one thing you can implement from the 5 steps in the blog post above support you in shifting into a healthy use of comparison that will inspire you to adapt receive and create to support you with end of year hustle?

Struggling with business and leadership overwhelm?

Reaching your business goals with ease, inspiration and calm takes consistent choice/action to shift from awareness, to understanding, and into knowing (what I call the AUK Transformation Process) – and it very rarely happens without accountability and support. Many other HSP entrepreneurs just like you are working to manage overwhelm, burnout, and other day-to-day challenges with business operations and marketing as a highly sensitive entrepreneur.

My high mentor recommendation is to schedule a complimentary clarity call with either myself or a very capable and uniquely trained-by-me member of the Business Miracles coach team. This is an opportunity to have one of the most eye-opening conversations you’ve ever had – without any attachment to the outcome – just a chance to connect with someone who “gets” you.
